Fun Fruit Facts: Tomatoes

Written By: Sheena - Feb• 08•12

Do you remember the shock you felt when you first learned that tomatoes are a fruit? “Tomatoes aren’t fruit! They’re a vegetable!” The truth is that tomatoes are a fruit because they come from the ovary of a flower and contain the plant’s seed. That is the criteria.

Even if tomatoes have to be a fruit, they can still be a remarkable product.

It is believed that tomatoes came from Peru hundreds of years ago. The name “tomato” comes from the Aztec word “xitomatl”, which means “plump thing with a navel”. The scientific name for a fruit literally means “wolf peach”.

Since it was discovered, tomatoes have garnered world popularity. They are the fourth most-consumed market product behind potatoes, lettuce, and onions. The average person in the US eats about 23 pounds of tomatoes a year. Seventy-five percent of this is in processed form (e.g. ketchup, salsa and tomato sauce).

Did you know that more money is spent on salsa every year than on ketchup?

In the US, California produces 96% of all processed tomatoes. Florida produces the most fresh-market tomatoes. Some people–93% of people in the US actually—grow tomatoes in their gardens or homes. Tomatoes are easy to grow and can be grown in all 50 US states. There are approximately 10,000 varieties of tomatoes.

Tomatoes are one of the healthiest fruits. In fact, they have more health benefits than apples. They are very low in fat and calories and have no cholesterol. Tomatoes contain several antioxidants that prevent certain types of cancer. Some studies have shown that men who eat more tomatoes are less likely to have prostate cancer.

Tomatoes have lots of Vitamin C and Lycopene. Both of these fight sickness and infection, and rid your body of free radicals. Free radicals are dangerous substances in your body that cause cancer and health problems.

Tomato festivals are popular around the world and in the US. Every year in Spain, about 30,000 people get together for a tomato fight. They use approximately 100 tons of tomatoes.

Tomatoes really are a fantastic fruit!

Spring Health Tips

Written By: Sheena - Feb• 01•12

Winter is still upon us; in some places more than others. But before you know it, spring will be here. The start of spring means warm weather, being able to play and exercise outside again, and of course spring allergies.

In preparation for one of the best seasons of the year, we have a couple exercise and spring allergy tips.

Exercise

You might be one of those people who love exercise; who finds it easy to roll out of bed in the morning to go for a run. Or you may be one of those people who struggle with a regular exercise routine. Whether you are in the former group, the latter group, or somewhere in between; we have some ideas for how you can improve and enjoy exercising this year.

1. Find someone to exercise with. This can make your weightlifting session or daily jog so much more enjoyable. It also acts as a great motivator to get you out the door each day.

2. Buy workout clothes that you feel confident and comfortable in. High-quality gear has more benefits than just making you look sexy. A nice pair of shoes can offer essential support to your feet and reduce pain or injury. Make sure to find shoes that offer the proper support to your arch-type. Certain fabrics are designed to absorb sweat and dry more quickly. On the other hand, your cotton tee shirt is similar to a large sponge.

3. Remember to warm-up and stretch before your workout; and cool-down and stretch after your workout. A proper warm-up or cool-down makes it easier for your body to transition to/from an intense workout. Stretching increases your flexibility. It also helps your avoid injuries causes by muscle tears and strain on bones or tendons.

Spring Allergies

Unfortunately, there isn’t a miracle cure for spring allergies, but there are things that can be done to ease the symptoms. Spring allergies can be treated with prescription or over-the-counter drugs. Other people prefer natural remedies. Butterbur, Quercetin, Stinging nettle, and nasal irrigation are all spring allergy remedies that could help. Their actual effectiveness has not been confirmed

Try to stay indoors on days when there is a lot of pollen in the air. During the spring, keep doors and windows closed as much as possible. Buy an air purifier and clean air filters regularly. Clean areas in your house that collect pollen (e.g. vents and shelves) and vacuum regularly. Also be sure to wash your hair and clothes because pollen will collect on them.

Spring sounds so far away, but two months will fly by. Soon, you’ll be able to put away your coats, boots, and gloves and hit the beach, trails, lake, or whatever you prefer. Be prepared for allergies so you can make the most of the warm weather; and take advantage of the warm weather by getting out of the gym and exercising outdoors.

Reducing Holiday Blues

Written By: Breanna - Dec• 21•11

holiday bluesThere is a reason Dr. Sesus wrote “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” all those years ago. It is an extreme example of what happens to people who feel the holiday blues. We all face hard times and struggle to make holidays worthwhile, but sometimes the stress of the holidays just gets to us. In this blog, we will discuss reasons why we get the blues, and step to take to prevent them.

Remembering the Good Old Days

It is always fun to remember Christmas past, however when you think of all the fun things you got or how you went to DisneyWorld and are not able to go this year you ten to get depressed. Know that you can’t have the perfect Christmas every year, and try to make the best out of what you have.

Remember to be realistic- it is always fun to daydream, but when you do not get that paintball gun you have always wanted, try not to be too disappointed.

The Season of Giving

In today’s world, we are used to getting extravagant gifts and having huge meals. However we need to remember that this season is a season of giving. By serving others, we will begin to feel better about ourselves and feel the need to complain less.

Remember to Budget

I know you want to get little Jimmy that perfect racecar, or Brittany that ipod she has always wanted, but financial worries can damper the holiday spirit. If you feel you do not have enough money to pay for those girfts- do not buy them! Set a budget for everything that will happen during the holidays. For example, budget food, travel expenses, and gifts.

Spending time with friends and family can be a joyous thing. Remember to enjoy yourself and relax. The holidays were not created to bring unwanted stress and depression into our lives.

Reducing Stress during the Holidays

Written By: Breanna - Dec• 06•11

holiday stressNow that Christmas is coming along in just a few short weeks, it is important to know that things will go wrong, someone will buy the same toy as you, and you will be expected to give the toast. Keeping these things in mind will help prepare you for the tough times ahead and reduce unwanted stress.

Prepare!

The first step in reducing your stress during the holidays is to plan and prepare. You don’t have to plan everything to a T, but people who have things planned generally have a more enjoyable holiday than those who do not. Make a list of all the things you need for the holidays. Have separate lists for toys, food, and other accessories your family may need if they are staying at your house.

Flexibility!

Things almost never go as planned, so expect the worst, but hope for the best. Someone is going to show up late with the ham, or your mom got you the same gift you got her. Just be sure to understand that things will go wrong. Keep several back-up plans. Like having a spare gift upstairs in case someone forgot to get jimmy a gift.

You are not Alone!

Who says you have to go through the holiday stress and planning alone? You are not superman, and should not expect yourself to be able to do the things he does. Do not be afraid to ask for a little help here and there.

Remember to have Fun

The last thing to keep in mind is to have fun. Enjoy yourself at your parties and dinners. There is no point in having a holiday that you do not enjoy. Remember that the holidays are a time of giving, not of selfishness and you should be well on your way to a stress-free holiday.

Alice in Wonderland Syndrome

Written By: Breanna - Nov• 17•11

Alice in wonderland syndromeWe are all familiar with the loveable movie, Alice in Wonderland. But are we aware that there is an actual illness called the Alice in Wonderland Syndrome? This very real sickness causes quite a few people grief in their daily lives.

What is Alice in Wonderland Syndrome?

The Alice in Wonderland Syndrome is an illness that causes you to perceive things in a different way. You may feel like you are taller than you really are or you may feel like your leg goes through the ground. The ground you walk on will feel spongy, making it difficult to walk. Driving becomes impossible as objects are distorted and depth perception is diminished.

Who can get Alice in Wonderland Syndrome

Alice in Wonderland Syndrome generally shows up in children. When they grow older, kids often are able to grow out of their Alice in Wonderland Syndrome. It can happen to adults as well, and is harder to grow out of it.

How you get Alice in Wonderland Syndrome

There are several reasons the Alice in Wonderland Syndrome can activate in your body. One of them is migraines. The pain can be so terrible that you cannot focus on reality. It causes you to see things that are not really there.

Two other possible causes could be temporal lobe epilepsy. The last could be Epstein-Barr virus, which has the potential to cause infectious mononucleosis.

Fixing Alice in Wonderland Syndrome

At the moment, there are no known cures for Alice in Wonderland Syndrome. The only way to attempt to fix it is to find the underlying cause for Alice in Wonderland Syndrome and treat that.

So the next time you read Alice in Wonderland, remember that it is not all fun and games. Seeing things differently can be fun, but it makes it hard to live a normal life.

The Cure to Sleep

Written By: admin - Nov• 07•11

how-to-get-rid-of-restless-sleepA lot of people are restless at night; they try various things such as sleep pills, different pillows, or even warm milk at night. When none of these are working properly, try turning to exercise to give you that sleep you desperately need.

Researchers have said that one cure to a sleepless night is exercise. The key to this cure is to know how to use it right. Studies have shown that if you exercise two times a day, it will help promote your body to relax at the proper time.

Exercise in the Morning

Exercise in the morning can help promote alertness and get those endorphins pumping. Exercising in the morning will help clear your brain of mental cobwebs and allow you to work. Also, if you exercise in natural lighting it will tell your brain that you are awake at the right time; thus improving your schedule even more.

Exercise in the Late Afternoon

Studies have shown that people who exercise in the late afternoon also helps you to sleep. At night, your body’s temperature starts to decrease; exercising at night only helps this progression and will give you the extra boost you need to get the right amount of sleep.

Other Reasons why Exercise is the Cure

• Exercise allows your body to relieve the stress from the day
• Exercise gives your body physical stress so its natural response to that is to rest

Remember to be Patient

Patience is an important thing to keep in mind when dealing with sleep problems. Your sleep didn’t get messed up overnight, so don’t expect it to get fixed overnight either. It can take between 2 to 6 weeks before you start to notice any difference with your body’s sleep patterns.

With a little bit of exercise, your body is on its way toward a healthier lifestyle.

Weird Facts About Death

Written By: mikkel - Oct• 19•11

The movies like to introduce all sorts of weird things that can supposedly happen after death, at least if you live in Zombieland, but realistically there are some weird things that the body does after death. Yes, I am talking about humans, not just the chicken that lives and runs around without a head, eventually choking on a piece of chicken feed. Here are a few things that you might not have known about the afterlife of your body.

1. Hair & Nails
The body begins to dehydrate, which leads to decomposition. It pulls the skin back taught, which leads the eyelids and lips to open unless the undertaker takes special care. So yes, those movements and the corpse suddenly looking at you (if you don’t have a responsible undertaker) is completely normal. In addition, the dehydrated skin will also pull away from the nail beds and the scalp. It makes it look like the hair and nails have grown when in fact they have not.

2. What Defines Death
While the definition of death has changed quite a few times over the years, it is now defined as 1) an irreversible cessation of circulatory or respiratory function; or 2) irreversible cessation of all functions of the entire brain, including the brain stem.

3. The Body After a Year
It’s not the outside that you have to worry about. No matter how solid the coffin, it’s the bacteria that is normally found in the digestive tract that relocates and starts to break down the body. Based on this, body decomposition can widely vary from good with the exception of excessive mold growth to completely skeletal. It is influenced by soil type, vault walls, cause of death, the embalming process, and quite a few other factors.

4. The Biggest Killer
While most of us don’t live in Africa, where mosquitos, as small as they may be, are associated with millions of death due to the spread of AIDS, malaria, and other serious disease, mosquitos are estimated to be the #1 killer across the world. More specifically, mosquitos infect more than 70 million people with malaria alone annually.

5. Scared to Death
Is it possible? If you have a heart arrhythmia, then a sudden scare may over-stimulate the heart, leading to death. The phenomenon has been documented and shown in extreme emotional situations or natural disasters. However, experts associate most, if not all, with an underlying heart condition, some of which may not have been initially recognized.

6. Mary Kay for the Dead
Yes, there are beauticians for the dead, and Mary Kay has their own kit made especially for the dead. It includes wound filler, lip wax, old age cosmetics, adult, peach, suntan, deep flesh, and other pieces that apply specifically to the dead. In addition, a good mortician closes the jaw with two wires stapled into the upper and lower gums.

7. Morticians Can Be Just Like You…..
Except for the part where they work in a mortuary of course. Morticians generally work during the day like everybody else, morticians do not have to break any bones after rigor mortis sets in, and some even have a sense of humor. Just like any other profession, some are more sensitive to the needs of the consumer, but a mortuary does not create or breed the strange as some might think.

Obese Brain May Crave High Calorie Food

Written By: mikkel - Oct• 05•11

While it’s common for many to blame hormones for obesity, leaving out the fact that most of these hormones improve with diet and exercise and are exacerbated by unhealthy lifestyle habits. However, a new study suggests that the brain of an obese patient actually craves higher calorie foods.

The study specifically connects low blood sugar levels with a greater desire for high calorie foods, which can increase or maintain higher rates of obesity among these individuals. Consequently, it may also promote overeating according to author Kathleen A. Page, an assistant professor at the University of Southern California.

Page goes on to say “We don’t know if that’s a consequence of obesity or contributes to the obese state. Are their brains wired differently from the start? Or does that happen after they become obese?”

Logically, were it a predisposition, rates of obesity in Europe would be just as high as those in the United States. However, all surveys so far show that the closest European competitor, the UK, has less than half the rate of obesity as compared to the United States, which would suggest that it’s an effect of obesity that contributes to further obesity, not a hereditary thing.

The study published by Page and others specifically looks into the effect of dips in blood sugar on the obese and those are a healthy weight. Published in the September 19 issue of The Journal of Clinical Investigation, this study used MRI scanners to monitor the brain of five obese and 9 non obese people, adjusting blood sugar levels and changing them from normal levels to low levels while showing them pictures of both healthy and high calorie foods.

According to the study, obese people showed limited activity in the prefrontal cortex, which is where we find inhibition, even when blood sugar levels were normal. In other words, it implies that obesity is not necessarily caused by low blood sugar, but low blood sugar may aggravate an existing lack of strong inhibitions in relation to high calorie foods.

Dr. Marc-Andre Cornier, an associate professor of medicine at the University of Colorado, has cautioned readers that the study does not directly link blood sugar and obesity. In fact, based on what we have seen, we would say that it connects it to the prefrontal cortex, with virtually no relation to blood sugar. However, the biggest deterrent for skeptics is both the small study group and the fact that there is only one study so far.

Can blood sugar control help you to lose weight? Theoretically, yes. There are plenty of diet pills that use that approach. However, it should not be your main focus or moreover, your only focus.

Can Your Urine Warn You About Serious Health Problems?

Written By: admin - Oct• 04•11

The only thing that most of us think about when we think about our urine is how frequently we pee, how small a bladder we may have, and occasionally, we think of the fact that eating asparagus makes our pee smell bad. Health enthusiasts and athletes are sometimes aware of the fact that your pee gets lighter the more water you drink (i.e. if you are drinking enough water, your urine should be clear or close to). However, there are a few things that you need to now. What if your urine:

Looks Pale

If your urine is colorless like water, it means that you have been drinking a lot of water, and in most cases, it means that you are drinking enough water to stay hydrated. You will most likely urinate more frequently, and it can have somewhat of a cleansing effect.

Is Brownish

If urine is a brownish color or iced tea color, this could be a sign that you are severely dehydrated. If it is dark brown, you are extremely dehydrated and the kidney is producing more concentrated urine. You may experience dizziness or lightheadedness, and it is better to drink more water and possibly even visit your local hospital.

Is Sweet Smelling

If you catch a whiff of sweet smelling urine, this may be a serious problem. It indicates high concentrations of sugar in the body, which may mean that you are at a higher risk or you are already experiencing symptoms of diabetes. If you are pregnant, this may mean that your kidney filtration system may be changing.

Has a Funny Smell

If your urine has a funny smell, it may seem disconcerting. However, certain foods such as asparagus are well-known for causing this effect, and these foods are completely harmless. As soon as these foods are digested, this smell should disappear.

Is Bright Yellow

Urine that is neon yellow might seem a little scary, but it is most likely caused by a daily multivitamin, nothing more, nothing less. It just means that your body cannot absorb all of the vitamins at once and you are urinating away some of these vitamins.

Has Blood

If it is a small spot of blood that is not associated with menstrual cycles, it could indicate an infection or it could indicate something as serious as cancer. Your doctor can give you a better idea of what it is in your particular case.

Is Constantly Flowing

It depends partly on how much you are drinking, but if you feel like you always have to go, it may have to do with an overactive bladder, which is a serious medical disorder. If frequent bathroom visits are negatively impacting your life, you should go see your doctor.

Feels Like It Is Burning

If you get a burning sensation when you pee, you most likely have a urinary tract infection and you should go see your doctor for treatment. You can also drink more cranberry juice and take other natural approaches.

Facts About OCD

Written By: admin - Sep• 20•11

Many of us claim OCD, or we even laugh about it. Everybody has their tendencies to go a little overboard, but generally, OCD is in part defined as something that actually disrupts or defines one’s life, preventing a person from being fully functional at times.

Of course, there are different severities and different types, but it can actually be painful for some. Treatment could be as simple as supplementing essential amino acids into one’s diet (there is only one variety that responds to this treatment), as long lasting as behavioral therapy, or as complicated as serious medications. It goes on a case by case basis.

However, regardless of what we think right now, OCD can be serious and there are things that people in general, especially those with OCD or family members, should know about it.

1. OCD Follows Patterns
A lot of people have seen Monk, a show about a man who suffers from OCD associated with cleanliness. This is actually one of the most common obsessions, but what you might not know is that most OCD patients fall within a few basic categories.

Outside of a fear of dirt and germs, some need everything to be symmetrical while others feel a need to harm loved ones or people around them. That’s not something that most would think of as OCD, but it’s actually rather common.

2. OCD Often Appears Alongside Another Disorder
Yes, you may suffer from OCD and nothing else. However, OCD is an anxiety based disorder, and it is usually accompanied by another disorder either as a contributor or the result of something like depression, which can make treatment and diagnosis more difficult.

3. It Generally Starts During Childhood or Adolescence
There are some who believe that mental illness does not affect us until adulthood. However, OCD is one that generally starts anywhere from early childhood to adolescence. It may be highly visible or you might not even notice during this period, but about 1/3 of OCD cases start in childhood.

4. 2% of the Population
As much as we all like to talk about having OCD, it only affects 2% of the population at any given time. This consists of some new and some old cases. However, we generally get confused in part because it can be difficult to differentiate between normal and obsessive compulsive behavior.

5. Stress Can Contribute
Stress doesn’t generally cause OCD per say, but many experience their first obvious flare up during times of extreme stress or certain events. It is generally something that people feel that they have control over.

6. Anti-depressants Can Help
This does not apply to everyone, and medications vary. However, there are some studies that have shown that anti-depressant medication may help to fight obsessive compulsive behavior. It is generally recommended that this be combined with cognitive therapy.

7. You Can Learn to Control Your Thoughts
Some need the help of medication to get to a place where they can do this, but generally speaking, you can learn to control your obsessive compulsive thoughts. It is vital not to give in to your temptation. Yes, it takes time, but it can happen.

8. OCD Can be Inherited
This is on a case by case basis, but OCD can be inherited from a parent or someone else in your family line. There is some debate, but it can also be learned.
